Express Entry pool drops 186 profiles amid 351–400 CRS slump

Express Entry pool (Aug 30): small net decline, major CRS-band shifts and rising competition at the top

Immediate update and why it matters
The Express Entry pool barely changed between Aug. 16 and Aug. 30, 2026 — a net decline of just 186 profiles — but that masks notable reshuffling. Top-scoring profiles (501+) rose from 19,096 to 20,101, driven mainly by a gain in the 501–600 band (+885). Meanwhile, the 351–400 band fell by nearly 1,800 profiles. Those movements change relative competitiveness across bands and can affect future cutoff behaviour. If you’re in the pool, especially in mid-to-high CRS ranges, this snapshot shifts your percentile position and the odds of receiving an ITA in different draw types.

How the pool changed in numbers
IRCC reported the pool moving from 226,859 to 226,673 profiles (−186). Key band changes between Aug. 16 and Aug. 30:
– 0–300: 7,735 (up 26)
– 301–350: 17,495 (up 226)
– 351–400: 46,824 (down 1,776)
– 471–480: 16,981 (up 355)
– 501–600: 19,542 (up 885)
– 601–1,200: 559 (up 120)

These shifts show concentrated movement rather than a broad decline: many mid-range candidates were removed, while higher-scoring profiles increased.

Pool composition and percentiles: reading competitiveness
Highlights from the Aug. 30 snapshot:
– 501–600: 19,542 candidates (8.62% of the pool), occupying the 91.13%–99.75% percentile range.
– 601–1,200: 559 candidates (0.25% of the pool), the very top tier.
– 351–400: 46,824 candidates (20.66% of the pool).

Percentiles show the share of candidates with CRS equal to or below each band’s upper limit. Growth in the 501–600 band tightens competition among high-scoring candidates for draws that target top scores or narrow categories.

Which draws reshaped the pool between Aug. 16 and Aug. 30
IRCC held three draws in that two-week period:
– Aug. 17 — PNP: 442 ITAs; lowest-ranked candidate 760 CRS.
– Aug. 18 — CEC: 1,000 ITAs; lowest-ranked candidate 523 CRS. This CEC cutoff was the highest recorded among CEC draws so far in 2026.
– Aug. 19 — French-language category: 5,000 ITAs; lowest-ranked candidate 382 CRS.

Those draws issued a combined 6,442 ITAs, explaining much of the reduction in specific bands — notably the 351–400 band after the large French-language draw. The Aug. 30 snapshot does not include two subsequent draws (Aug. 31 PNP and Sept. 1 CEC) that added another 2,562 ITAs.

What the numbers say about selection priorities
Two concurrent dynamics stand out:
– Large category-based draws (language or occupation-focused) removed many mid-range candidates.
– High-scoring candidates are concentrating at the top of the pool (notably in 501–600 and 601+), increasing intra-band competition.

This mix tightens margins for broad, high-cutoff draws while leaving episodic opportunities in category-based and PNP rounds.

Who should pay special attention
– CEC candidates: CEC draws remain a major source of ITAs and have shown high cutoffs recently.
– French-language and language-category candidates: Large language draws can clear substantial mid-range bands.
– PNP hopefuls: PNP rounds often have very high cutoffs for a small number of invites.
– Mid-range applicants (351–480): Expect volatility — category draws can quickly change percentiles.
– Top-tier applicants (501+): More peers in your band means more competition for top-level draws.

Practical implications
– Shifted odds: Growth at the top can raise effective thresholds for high-cutoff draws.
– Category routes matter: Targeted draws can provide faster pathways for those who meet specific criteria.
– Be prepared: An ITA requires a complete application within 60 days.
– Processing expectations: Express Entry applications have historically been finalized in about six months; base PNP applications have generally taken about 12–20 months over the past year.

Important numbers and dates from the snapshot
– Pool total (Aug. 30): 226,673 candidates (net −186 vs. Aug. 16).
– Top-scoring profiles (501+): 20,101 on Aug. 30 (up from 19,096).
– Notable band changes: 351–400 fell by 1,776; 501–600 rose by 885; 601–1,200 rose by 120.
– Draws Aug. 16–30: Aug. 17 PNP (442 ITAs, cutoff 760); Aug. 18 CEC (1,000 ITAs, cutoff 523); Aug. 19 French-language (5,000 ITAs, cutoff 382).
– Draws not in the Aug. 30 snapshot: Aug. 31 PNP (562 ITAs, cutoff 697) and Sept. 1 CEC (2,000 ITAs, cutoff 521) — 2,562 ITAs added after the snapshot.
– Year-to-date ITAs through Express Entry (most recent reporting): 117,427 in 2026, with 43.6% to CEC candidates.
– Cutoff contrasts this year: healthcare and social services categories 467–475 CRS; CEC draws 507–523.

How to interpret your percentile position
Percentiles show how many candidates are at or below a band’s upper limit. For example, a CRS within 501–600 places you roughly in the top 8.6% of the pool. A higher percentile improves relative standing but does not guarantee an ITA — selection depends on IRCC’s draw type and objectives.

Practical steps to consider now
Assess your standing: check your CRS, find your band and percentile, and compare with recent cutoffs.
Update documents: be ready to submit a complete application within 60 days if invited.
Consider category pathways: evaluate language- or occupation-based draws if you meet the criteria.
Monitor trends: patterns across PNP, CEC, and category draws matter more than single cutoffs.

What to watch next
Watch IRCC pool snapshots after Sept. 1 (the Aug. 30 snapshot didn’t include the Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 draws). Track whether the 501–600 band continues to grow, whether top-tier bands expand, and whether category draws keep targeting mid-range bands. Year-to-date ITA counts and program shares also indicate where selections are concentrated.
