Main Duties
Medical Sonographers perform some or all of the following duties:
- Operate ultrasound imaging equipment to produce diagnostic images
- Monitor image quality and adjust equipment settings
- Record, store, and process ultrasound data and images
- Observe and monitor patients during examinations
- Prepare reports and preliminary findings for physicians
- Assist in diagnosing cardiac, vascular, abdominal, and obstetric conditions
- Perform quality control checks on imaging equipment
- Provide patient care and explain procedures
- Assist in prenatal monitoring and fetal assessments
- Supervise and train students or junior technologists
Employment Requirements

- Completion of a three- to four-year program in diagnostic medical sonography OR a two- to three-year allied health diploma plus a one-year accredited sonography program is required.
- Registration with Sonography Canada is usually required.
