Main Duties

Tool and die makers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret complex blueprints and 3D CAD models to determine specifications for tools, dies, and fixtures
  • Operate machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC equipment to cut and shape metal with high precision
  • Assemble, fit, and adjust tool and die components using hand tools and precision instruments
  • Measure and verify dimensions using micrometers, verniers, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM)
  • Heat-treat tools and dies to improve hardness, durability, and performance
  • Test completed tools and dies to ensure they meet engineering and production standards
  • Repair, modify, and maintain existing dies, tools, and gauges to extend lifecycle or adapt to new production needs
  • Work with CAD/CAM systems to support modern manufacturing and Industry 4.0 processes
