Main Duties

Sheet metal workers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout and fabrication processes
  • Measure, mark, and lay out sheet metal using laser or computerized equipment
  • Operate machinery such as shears, brakes, punches, and CNC plasma cutters to cut, bend, and shape sheet metal
  • Assemble sheet metal components using welding, riveting, soldering, and fastening techniques
  • Install fabricated metal products such as HVAC ducts, furnace casings, and exterior metal siding
  • Inspect finished products and installations to ensure compliance with building codes and specifications
  • Perform repairs and modifications to existing sheet metal structures and systems
  • Work with CAD tools for layout and fabrication planning in advanced manufacturing environments
