Main Duties

Structural metal and platework fabricators and fitters perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine material requirements and fabrication sequence
  • Construct templates and lay out reference points and patterns on heavy metal components
  • Rig, hoist, and move heavy metal sections using cranes and specialized lifting equipment
  • Assemble and fit metal plates and sections using tack welding, bolting, or riveting techniques
  • Operate heavy-duty machinery such as brake presses, shears, and CNC cutting torches
  • Shape, bend, and form structural components according to precise specifications
  • Install fabricated metal structures such as bridge sections, ship hulls, and industrial frameworks
  • Work with advanced fabrication tools including CNC systems and robotic welding equipment
