Main Duties
Structural metal and platework fabricators and fitters perform some or all of the following duties:
- Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine material requirements and fabrication sequence
- Construct templates and lay out reference points and patterns on heavy metal components
- Rig, hoist, and move heavy metal sections using cranes and specialized lifting equipment
- Assemble and fit metal plates and sections using tack welding, bolting, or riveting techniques
- Operate heavy-duty machinery such as brake presses, shears, and CNC cutting torches
- Shape, bend, and form structural components according to precise specifications
- Install fabricated metal structures such as bridge sections, ship hulls, and industrial frameworks
- Work with advanced fabrication tools including CNC systems and robotic welding equipment
