Main Duties

Ironworkers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to determine layout and installation sequence
  • Erect and install scaffolding, hoisting equipment, and rigging systems
  • Align, position, and secure structural steel units by bolting, welding, or riveting
  • Install reinforcing steel bars (rebar) or mesh to strengthen concrete structures
  • Install ornamental metalwork such as railings, stairways, curtain walls, and metal doors
  • Inspect structures and equipment for defects and ensure compliance with safety and building codes
  • Dismantle existing structures or equipment as part of renovation or industrial decommissioning
  • Work at heights using fall-protection systems and heavy lifting equipment
