Main Duties

Industrial electricians perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics, and electrical code specifications to determine layout of industrial electrical equipment
  • Install, examine, replace, or repair electrical wiring, conduits, feeders, fiber-optic and coaxial cable assemblies, and lighting fixtures
  • Test electrical and electronic equipment for continuity, current, voltage, and resistance
  • Maintain, repair, install, and test switchgear, transformers, switchboard meters, regulators, and reactors
  • Program and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Operate preventive maintenance programs and maintain detailed records for industrial machinery
  • Diagnose faults in automated systems and ensure continuous production efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with industrial safety standards and electrical codes

  • Completion of a 4-to-5-year industrial electrician apprenticeship program is typically required
  • Alternatively, over 5 years of work experience combined with relevant education may qualify for trade certification

  • Trade certification is available but voluntary in other provinces and territories
