Main Duties

Electrical power line and cable workers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical auxiliary equipment such as transformers, switches, lightning arresters, and insulators
  • Erect and maintain poles and towers made of steel, wood, or concrete for power transmission lines
  • Climb poles or operate bucket trucks to access high-voltage power lines
  • String, splice, and terminate electrical conductors using specialized tensioning and winching equipment
  • Install and repair underground power cables in trenches, ducts, and manholes
  • Locate and repair faults in transmission and distribution lines during outages
  • Conduct routine inspections and patrols to identify hazards or damaged infrastructure
  • Ensure strict compliance with high-voltage safety protocols and environmental regulations

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and benefits associated with this occupation in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is mandatory
  • Completion of a 3-to-4-year apprenticeship program for powerline technicians is typically required
  • Alternatively, over 4 years of work experience combined with industry courses may be accepted
  • Trade certification is compulsory in most provinces including Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, and Atlantic provinces
  • Trade certification is available but voluntary in Manitoba and some territories
