Main Duties

Plumbers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of water supply, waste, and venting systems
  • Install, repair, and maintain domestic, commercial, and industrial plumbing fixtures and systems
  • Cut, thread, and bend pipe using hand and power tools
  • Join pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, soldering, and brazing equipment
  • Test pipes and plumbing systems for leaks using air and water pressure gauges
  • Ensure plumbing installations comply with the National Plumbing Code and safety standards
  • Install and maintain high-efficiency water heaters and water-treatment systems
  • Work with modern plumbing technologies such as greywater recycling systems, hydronic radiant heating, and smart leak-detection devices

  • Completion of a four- to five-year apprenticeship program is usually required to be eligible for trade certification

  • Trade certification is available but voluntary in other provinces and territories
  • Red Seal endorsement is highly recommended for interprovincial mobility and higher earning potential
