Main Duties
Plumbers perform some or all of the following duties:
- Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of water supply, waste, and venting systems
- Install, repair, and maintain domestic, commercial, and industrial plumbing fixtures and systems
- Cut, thread, and bend pipe using hand and power tools
- Join pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, soldering, and brazing equipment
- Test pipes and plumbing systems for leaks using air and water pressure gauges
- Ensure plumbing installations comply with the National Plumbing Code and safety standards
- Install and maintain high-efficiency water heaters and water-treatment systems
- Work with modern plumbing technologies such as greywater recycling systems, hydronic radiant heating, and smart leak-detection devices
Employment Requirements

- Completion of secondary school is usually required
- Completion of a four- to five-year apprenticeship program is usually required to be eligible for trade certification
