Main Duties

Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to determine system layouts and installation requirements
  • Install and assemble HVAC systems including motors, controls, valves, and refrigeration components
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex HVAC systems using advanced diagnostic tools
  • Handle refrigerants in compliance with environmental regulations and perform leak detection and system recharging
  • Calibrate systems and test regulators to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency
  • Perform routine maintenance on heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
  • Install and service heat pumps, energy recovery ventilators, and climate control systems
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and environmental codes

Employment Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school is typically required
  • Completion of a three- to five-year apprenticeship program OR over five years of work experience combined with relevant courses is required
