Main Duties

Railway carmen/women perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Inspect interior and exterior components of railway cars to identify defects and assess damage
  • Install, maintain, and repair railway car parts such as compressors, air valves, bearings, couplings, and piping
  • Repair and maintain electrical and electronic systems related to propulsion and braking
  • Use welding equipment and power tools to repair metal and structural components
  • Perform maintenance on passenger, freight, subway, and streetcar vehicles
  • Test and adjust mechanical and electrical systems using digital diagnostic tools
  • Ensure compliance with rail safety standards and operational regulations
  • Maintain records using digital maintenance logging systems
