Main Duties
Elevator constructors and mechanics perform some or all of the following duties:
- Read and interpret blueprints to determine system layout and installation requirements
- Install elevators, escalators, and moving walkways according to specifications
- Assemble and connect car frames, counterweights, cables, and mechanical components
- Install and wire electrical and electronic control systems and safety devices
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical failures and repair defective components
- Perform preventative maintenance to ensure safety and system reliability
- Disassemble and replace worn components such as valves, seals, and brake systems
- Ensure compliance with national safety codes and regulatory standards for elevating devices
Employment Requirements

- Completion of secondary school is typically required
- Completion of a 4–5 year apprenticeship program (approximately 8,000 hours) is usually required
- Trade certification is compulsory in Alberta and Quebec and voluntary but highly recommended in other provinces
