Main Duties

Elevator constructors and mechanics perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret blueprints to determine system layout and installation requirements
  • Install elevators, escalators, and moving walkways according to specifications
  • Assemble and connect car frames, counterweights, cables, and mechanical components
  • Install and wire electrical and electronic control systems and safety devices
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical failures and repair defective components
  • Perform preventative maintenance to ensure safety and system reliability
  • Disassemble and replace worn components such as valves, seals, and brake systems
  • Ensure compliance with national safety codes and regulatory standards for elevating devices

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and benefits associated with this occupation in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is typically required
  • Completion of a 4–5 year apprenticeship program (approximately 8,000 hours) is usually required
  • Trade certification is compulsory in Alberta and Quebec and voluntary but highly recommended in other provinces

  • Strong skills in mechanical systems, industrial electricity, and control systems are essential
