Main Duties
Oil and solid fuel heating mechanics perform some or all of the following duties:
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to determine system layout
- Install and assemble oil burner components, thermostats, motors, and piping systems
- Connect heating systems to fuel supply and ventilation systems
- Test and calibrate heating systems to ensure optimal performance and fuel efficiency
- Troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning oil burners, wood boilers, and control systems
- Install and maintain solid fuel systems including wood and coal heating units
- Perform chimney, venting, and combustion system inspections
- Carry out preventative maintenance to ensure environmental compliance and system efficiency
Employment Requirements

- Completion of secondary school and a vocational program is typically required
- Completion of a 3–4 year apprenticeship program OR over 4 years of work experience combined with industry courses is required
- Trade certification is compulsory in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
