Main Duties

Motorcycle, ATV and related mechanics perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Use advanced diagnostic tools and software to identify faults in engine management systems and ABS modules
  • Repair and overhaul engines, transmissions, clutches, and fuel injection systems
  • Inspect and repair structural components such as frames and suspension systems
  • Adjust and tune ignition and fuel systems for performance and emissions compliance
  • Service electric and hybrid propulsion systems including lithium-ion batteries
  • Maintain and repair powered lift trucks, snowmobiles, and marine outboard motors
  • Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, brake servicing, and system inspections
  • Document repairs and provide technical advice to customers

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and benefits associated with this occupation in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is typically required
  • Completion of a three- to four-year apprenticeship program OR over four years of work experience combined with industry courses is required
  • Trade certification for Motorcycle Technicians (310G) is compulsory in Ontario
  • Trade certification is voluntary but highly recommended in other provinces
  • Additional certifications may be required for powered lift trucks or marine engines
  • Red Seal certification is highly recommended for interprovincial mobility
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, electronics, and diagnostics is essential
  • Experience with electric vehicles and hybrid systems is increasingly valuable
