Main Duties

Small engine and equipment repairers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Use diagnostic tools and compression testers to identify faults in fuel, ignition, and electrical systems
  • Repair and overhaul small engines (2-cycle and 4-cycle), transmissions, and hydraulic systems
  • Test and repair battery packs, charging systems, and electronic motor controllers in electric equipment
  • Adjust and calibrate ignition and fuel systems for performance and emissions compliance
  • Maintain and repair landscaping, forestry, and snow-removal equipment such as chainsaws and lawn tractors
  • Perform routine maintenance including lubrication, cleaning, and system inspection
  • Advise customers on maintenance, seasonal storage, and equipment usage
  • Maintain service records and ensure compliance with safety standards

  • Completion of a two- to three-year college program in small engine repair or industrial mechanics is recommended
  • Several years of on-the-job training OR a combination of education and 2+ years of experience is usually required

  • Red Seal certification may be available in some provinces for interprovincial mobility
