Main Duties

Air traffic controllers and related professionals perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Control the movement of aircraft using radar, radio communication, and visual observation to maintain safe distances
  • Issue takeoff, landing, and routing instructions to pilots
  • Monitor aircraft positions and adjust flight paths to avoid collisions or congestion
  • Provide weather, navigation, and airport condition updates to pilots
  • Alert emergency services in case of aircraft distress or missing aircraft
  • Coordinate with other air traffic control centers to ensure seamless flight transitions
  • Analyze flight plans, fuel requirements, and weather conditions (flight dispatchers)
  • Provide pre-flight briefings and operational information to pilots (flight service specialists)
