Main Duties
Air traffic controllers and related professionals perform some or all of the following duties:
- Control the movement of aircraft using radar, radio communication, and visual observation to maintain safe distances
- Issue takeoff, landing, and routing instructions to pilots
- Monitor aircraft positions and adjust flight paths to avoid collisions or congestion
- Provide weather, navigation, and airport condition updates to pilots
- Alert emergency services in case of aircraft distress or missing aircraft
- Coordinate with other air traffic control centers to ensure seamless flight transitions
- Analyze flight plans, fuel requirements, and weather conditions (flight dispatchers)
- Provide pre-flight briefings and operational information to pilots (flight service specialists)
Employment Requirements
