Main Duties

Deck officers, water transport perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Command and operate ships or other self-propelled vessels to transport passengers and cargo on oceans, coastal waters, and inland waterways
  • Plan and execute safe navigation routes using GPS, radar, charts, and electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS)
  • Supervise and coordinate deck crew activities and oversee cargo loading and unloading
  • Monitor vessel progress, weather, and sea conditions and record operations in the ship’s log
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations and procedures
  • Advise captains on safe navigation through restricted or hazardous waterways (ship pilots)
  • Maintain communication with port authorities and marine traffic control systems
  • Oversee vessel operations using modern navigation and satellite communication technologies

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is required
  • Completion of a Deck Officer Cadet program from an approved nautical institute is required
  • Deck Officer Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada is mandatory
  • One to three years of experience as a deck crew member is typically required
  • Ship pilots require a Ship Pilot License and Master Certificate of Competency
  • Candidates must pass a Transport Canada marine medical examination
