Main Duties
Engineer officers, water transport perform some or all of the following duties:
- Operate and monitor main engines, boilers, generators, pumps, and auxiliary machinery onboard vessels
- Stand engine room watch and monitor equipment performance using digital control and monitoring systems
- Inspect, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems onboard ships
- Coordinate and supervise engine room crew and apprentices
- Maintain logs and prepare reports on engine performance, fuel consumption, and system failures
- Ensure compliance with maritime safety and environmental regulations
- Troubleshoot mechanical failures and perform emergency repairs at sea
- Support implementation of modern systems such as LNG engines and automated ballast water systems
Employment Requirements
These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:
- Completion of secondary school is required
- Completion of a three-year cadet program in marine engineering OR equivalent experience with formal training
- Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada is mandatory
- Minimum 6 months of sea service and completion of Training Record Book for Engineers (TRBE)
- Candidates must pass a marine medical examination
- Strong mechanical, troubleshooting, and analytical skills are essential
- Knowledge of modern marine systems including automated monitoring and fuel systems is required
- Experience with engine room operations and safety protocols is critical
