Main Duties

Engineer officers, water transport perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate and monitor main engines, boilers, generators, pumps, and auxiliary machinery onboard vessels
  • Stand engine room watch and monitor equipment performance using digital control and monitoring systems
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems onboard ships
  • Coordinate and supervise engine room crew and apprentices
  • Maintain logs and prepare reports on engine performance, fuel consumption, and system failures
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety and environmental regulations
  • Troubleshoot mechanical failures and perform emergency repairs at sea
  • Support implementation of modern systems such as LNG engines and automated ballast water systems

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is required
  • Completion of a three-year cadet program in marine engineering OR equivalent experience with formal training
  • Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada is mandatory
  • Minimum 6 months of sea service and completion of Training Record Book for Engineers (TRBE)
  • Candidates must pass a marine medical examination
  • Strong mechanical, troubleshooting, and analytical skills are essential
  • Knowledge of modern marine systems including automated monitoring and fuel systems is required
  • Experience with engine room operations and safety protocols is critical
