Main Duties

Concrete finishers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Check formwork, base materials, and reinforcements before concrete pouring
  • Direct placement of concrete into forms according to specifications
  • Level and smooth freshly poured concrete using hand tools and floats
  • Operate power vibrators to compact concrete and remove air pockets
  • Ensure proper grading and depth based on construction blueprints
  • Apply finishes such as smooth, broom, or exposed aggregate textures
  • Operate power trowels and finishing equipment for large surfaces
  • Install fixtures such as anchor bolts, plates, and embedded components
  • Apply curing, sealing, and waterproofing compounds
  • Repair, restore, and replace damaged concrete surfaces in structures

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is typically required
  • Completion of a two- to four-year apprenticeship program OR equivalent experience
  • Over three years of work experience may substitute formal apprenticeship
  • Trade certification is compulsory in Quebec and voluntary in other provinces
