Main Duties

Painters and decorators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret specifications to determine materials and quantities required
  • Prepare and clean surfaces using scraping, sanding, sandblasting, and hydro-cleaning techniques
  • Remove old paint, wallpaper, and hazardous coatings using chemical or mechanical methods
  • Repair cracks and holes using fillers, plaster, and sealers to ensure smooth finishes
  • Mix and thin paint to achieve required color, consistency, and texture
  • Apply paint, stains, varnish, enamel, and coatings using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment
  • Measure, cut, and apply wallpaper or decorative coverings to interior surfaces
  • Assemble scaffolding, ladders, and swing stages for high or difficult areas
  • Advise clients on color schemes, materials, and durability of finishes
  • Estimate project costs based on surface area and material requirements

Employment Requirements
