Floor covering installers perform some or all of the following duties:

• Inspect, measure, and mark surfaces to ensure they are level and ready for installation
• Read blueprints and specifications to determine materials and installation requirements
• Measure, cut, and install underlay and underpadding for flooring systems
• Install carpeting using seamers, stretchers, and bonding techniques
• Stretch and secure carpets using power stretchers, tack strips, and staple guns
• Prepare and install hardwood flooring using nails, glue, or click-lock systems
• Measure, cut, and install resilient flooring such as vinyl and linoleum
• Install transitions, baseboards, and moldings for a complete finish
• Repair damaged flooring including patching carpets and replacing planks
• Estimate material and labor costs for residential and commercial projects

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

• Completion of secondary school is usually required
• Completion of a two- to three-year apprenticeship program OR equivalent experience
• Over four years of work experience combined with industry courses may qualify for certification
• Trade certification is compulsory in Quebec and voluntary in other provinces
• Red Seal endorsement is highly recommended for interprovincial mobility
• Strong physical stamina is required for lifting, bending, and kneeling
• Attention to detail and precision skills are essential
