Main Duties

Residential and commercial installers and servicers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications for installation requirements
  • Install windows, doors, appliances, and security systems using hand and power tools
  • Test installed systems to ensure safety and proper functionality
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in installed systems and equipment
  • Measure and mark layouts to ensure accurate installation positioning
  • Perform minor structural modifications such as cutting openings or reinforcing mounts
  • Demonstrate operation and maintenance of installed systems to clients
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment such as water systems and heating units
  • Maintain service records and documentation of installations and repairs
  • Prepare cost estimates for materials and labor

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is usually required
  • Completion of a one- to three-year college program OR 2–3 years of on-the-job training
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is typically required
