Main Duties
Residential and commercial installers and servicers perform some or all of the following duties:
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications for installation requirements
- Install windows, doors, appliances, and security systems using hand and power tools
- Test installed systems to ensure safety and proper functionality
- Diagnose and repair malfunctions in installed systems and equipment
- Measure and mark layouts to ensure accurate installation positioning
- Perform minor structural modifications such as cutting openings or reinforcing mounts
- Demonstrate operation and maintenance of installed systems to clients
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment such as water systems and heating units
- Maintain service records and documentation of installations and repairs
- Prepare cost estimates for materials and labor
Employment Requirements
These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:
- Completion of secondary school is usually required
- Completion of a one- to three-year college program OR 2–3 years of on-the-job training
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is typically required
