Main Duties

Transport truck drivers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Plan routes and obtain required documentation for interprovincial and international transport
  • Operate heavy trucks including tractor-trailers and long-combination vehicles over 4500 kg
  • Perform pre-trip, en route, and post-trip inspections of vehicle systems
  • Ensure cargo is properly secured and complies with safety regulations
  • Obtain permits for oversized or international shipments
  • Record cargo details, hours of service, fuel usage, and distance using ELD systems
  • Maintain logbooks and bills of lading in compliance with regulations
  • Communicate with dispatchers, clients, and other drivers using onboard systems
  • Perform minor roadside repairs and equipment adjustments
  • Transport hazardous materials following TDG safety requirements where applicable

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is usually required
  • Valid Class 1 or A driver’s license for tractor-trailers (preferred for immigration)
  • Class 3 or D license required for straight-body trucks
  • Air Brake Endorsement (Z) is mandatory
  • Completion of Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) in most provinces
  • TDG certification required for transporting hazardous goods
  • Clean driving record and medical fitness certification are required
  • Ability to operate electronic logging devices and navigation systems
