Main Duties

Bus drivers, subway operators and other transit operators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate buses, streetcars, subway trains, or light rail vehicles along assigned routes
  • Assist passengers including those with disabilities during boarding and exiting
  • Collect fares, validate passes, and issue transfers where required
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections for safety compliance
  • Maintain communication with dispatchers using radios or onboard systems
  • Operate controls for doors, signals, and vehicle systems safely
  • Handle emergency situations including evacuations and technical issues
  • Monitor passenger behavior to ensure safety, especially in school transport
  • Provide route, schedule, and fare information to passengers
  • Report delays, incidents, or mechanical issues to control centers

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is usually required
  • Class 2 driver’s license required in most provinces
  • Ontario requires Class B, C, E, or F license depending on vehicle type
  • Air Brake Endorsement (Z) is mandatory
