Main Duties

Railway and yard locomotive engineers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate locomotives to transport passengers and freight across rail networks
  • Communicate with train crews and traffic controllers to coordinate safe movements
  • Conduct pre-departure inspections and test locomotive controls and safety systems
  • Perform yard switching operations including coupling and uncoupling rail cars
  • Execute switching tasks based on written orders or dispatch instructions
  • Inspect locomotives for mechanical issues and perform routine maintenance tasks
  • Monitor track conditions, signals, and speed limits in compliance with CROR regulations
  • Respond to mechanical issues during transit and coordinate with maintenance teams
  • Record trip data, fuel consumption, and operational details in logbooks
  • Ensure passenger safety and comfort through smooth operation of trains

Employment Requirements
