Main Duties

Railway conductors and brakemen/women perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Supervise and coordinate train crew activities to ensure safety and schedule adherence
  • Receive and interpret train orders, signals, and dispatcher instructions
  • Inspect train cars, brakes, and couplings before departure
  • Operate track switches to move rail cars for loading, unloading, or assembly
  • Set and release handbrakes and connect air brake systems between cars
  • Ensure cargo is properly secured and complies with safety regulations
  • Assist in passenger safety and onboard coordination when required
  • Oversee train assembly and disassembly operations in rail yards
  • Respond to emergencies such as mechanical failures or track issues
  • Maintain logs of train movements, delays, and operational incidents

Employment Requirements

  • Completion of employer-provided railway training programs (3–6 months)
  • Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) certification is required
