Main Duties

Heavy equipment operators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and graders
  • Move, load, and grade earth, rock, gravel, and other materials
  • Clear land, brush, and stumps for construction, logging, or mining projects
  • Operate pile-driving equipment for building and bridge foundations
  • Use dredging equipment to deepen waterways or reclaim land
  • Operate paving machinery to spread and compact asphalt or concrete
  • Excavate materials in mining operations such as open-pit mines and quarries
  • Conduct daily pre-operation inspections of equipment and safety systems
  • Perform basic maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, and refueling
  • Use GPS and computer-guided systems for precision excavation and grading

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Some secondary school education is usually required
  • Completion of a 1–2 year apprenticeship program or equivalent training
  • Combination of college courses and on-the-job training is accepted
  • Certification is compulsory in Quebec and voluntary in other provinces
  • Red Seal endorsement is available and highly recommended
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations and machine operations
  • Ability to operate GPS-guided and automated machinery systems
