Main Duties
Drillers and blasters perform some or all of the following duties:
- Operate drilling rigs such as rotary, air-track, and down-the-hole machines to bore blast holes
- Read diagrams and plans to determine drilling patterns and hole depth
- Conduct field tests to determine type and quantity of explosives required
- Assemble primer charges with detonators, fuses, and cords
- Load explosives into blast holes manually or with bulk explosive trucks
- Connect wires and fuses to blasting systems for controlled detonation
- Clear blast areas and initiate detonation following strict safety procedures
- Operate foundation drilling equipment for construction projects
- Maintain logs of drilling activities, explosive usage, and results
- Ensure compliance with provincial safety and blasting regulations
Employment Requirements

- Experience as a heavy equipment operator or blaster helper is usually required
- Provincial blasting license is mandatory across Canada
