Main Duties

Drillers and blasters perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate drilling rigs such as rotary, air-track, and down-the-hole machines to bore blast holes
  • Read diagrams and plans to determine drilling patterns and hole depth
  • Conduct field tests to determine type and quantity of explosives required
  • Assemble primer charges with detonators, fuses, and cords
  • Load explosives into blast holes manually or with bulk explosive trucks
  • Connect wires and fuses to blasting systems for controlled detonation
  • Clear blast areas and initiate detonation following strict safety procedures
  • Operate foundation drilling equipment for construction projects
  • Maintain logs of drilling activities, explosive usage, and results
  • Ensure compliance with provincial safety and blasting regulations

Employment Requirements
