Mail and parcel sorters perform some or all of the following duties:

• Sort mail and parcels manually or using automated sorting systems
• Bundle, label, and route mail to appropriate delivery channels
• Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts and conveyor systems
• Load and unload mail and parcels from trucks and containers
• Maintain address databases and process incoming and outgoing mail
• Verify addresses and redirect incorrectly labeled packages
• Weigh parcels and calculate postage requirements
• Operate mail-sorting machines and labeling systems
• Perform basic maintenance of sorting and mailing equipment
• Ensure timely processing of high-volume shipments in logistics facilities

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

• Completion of secondary school is required
• On-the-job training is typically provided
• Some office administration courses may be required for mailroom roles
• Reliability status or security clearance may be required
• WHMIS certification may be required for warehouse environments
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods
