Main Duties

Railway yard and track maintenance workers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate control panel switches to regulate train movements in railway yards
  • Align and switch train cars for coupling, uncoupling, and servicing
  • Operate specialized machinery for laying and repairing railway tracks
  • Spread and level ballast to ensure track stability and safety
  • Inspect tracks and identify damaged rails, switches, or drainage issues
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on track equipment
  • Clear snow, ice, and debris from tracks and switches
  • Operate rail-specific equipment such as tie tampers and ballast regulators
  • Assist in maintaining safe railway operations and traffic flow
  • Work in rotating shifts and ensure compliance with railway safety standards
