Main Duties

Water transport deck and engine room crew perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Assist in mooring and unmooring vessels and handling cargo operations
  • Operate winches, cranes, and deck equipment
  • Maintain lookout for navigation hazards and assist with vessel navigation
  • Clean, paint, and maintain decks and ship structures
  • Splice ropes and maintain safety equipment such as lifeboats and firefighting gear
  • Assist marine engineers with engine operations and maintenance
  • Lubricate machinery and monitor engine performance and gauges
  • Record engine room data and support fuel and water operations
  • Participate in emergency drills and safety procedures
  • Work on rotational shifts onboard vessels for extended periods

Employment Requirements

These are the typical employment requirements and certifications required in Canada:

  • Completion of secondary school is required
  • Bridge Watch Rating or Engine Room Rating certification required
  • STCW Basic Safety Training (Marine Emergency Duties)
  • Marine Medical Certificate required
  • Experience at sea (6–12 months) preferred for advanced roles
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights
  • Strong physical fitness and endurance
  • Willingness to work rotational shifts (e.g., 28 days on/off)
