Main Duties

Utility maintenance workers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair water and wastewater systems
  • Maintain water mains, valves, hydrants, and service connections
  • Detect gas and water leaks using specialized equipment
  • Install and replace water meters and gas meters
  • Operate utility vehicles and machinery such as vacuum trucks and trenching equipment
  • Respond to emergency utility failures such as water main breaks or gas leaks
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections
  • Maintain digital records of repairs and maintenance activities
  • Work in confined spaces and outdoor environments
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards

Employment Requirements
