Main Duties

Longshore workers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Load and unload cargo from ships using mechanical equipment or manual methods
  • Operate forklifts, cranes, and other terminal equipment
  • Handle bulk materials such as grain, coal, and containers
  • Secure cargo using lashings, bracing, and dunnage
  • Direct crane operators using hand signals or radio communication
  • Operate Ro-Ro vehicles to move cargo on and off ships
  • Assist in maintenance and inspection of terminal equipment
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of goods
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of dock areas
  • Work in shifts including nights and weekends
