Main Duties

Fishing masters and officers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Command fishing vessels to pursue and harvest fish and other marine species
  • Determine fishing zones, plot navigation routes, and calculate positions using charts and instruments
  • Operate navigational systems such as radar, GPS, and echo sounders
  • Direct fishing operations and supervise crew activities onboard
  • Maintain logs of catch, crew performance, weather, and voyage details
  • Ensure compliance with Transport Canada safety standards and marine regulations
  • Select, train, and manage crew members for safe and efficient vessel operations
  • Monitor vessel performance and ensure proper handling of fishing equipment
  • Coordinate docking, unloading, and post-harvest operations
