Main Duties

Fishing vessel deckhands perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Assist in setting, hauling, and storing fishing gear such as nets, traps, and lines
  • Operate deck equipment including winches, cranes, and hydraulic hauling systems
  • Sort, clean, and grade fish or shellfish by species and size
  • Store catch in ice holds or live tanks to preserve quality
  • Clean and maintain decks, fishing gear, and vessel equipment
  • Assist in loading supplies, fuel, and bait before departure
  • Support docking and undocking procedures under supervision
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks on vessel equipment
  • Follow strict maritime safety protocols and participate in emergency drills
