Main Duties

Power engineers and power systems operators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate automated and computerized control systems, boilers, turbines, generators, and reactors to produce power, heat, and refrigeration
  • Start up and shut down plant equipment and control switching operations
  • Monitor gauges, meters, valves, and control panels to ensure safe and efficient operations
  • Detect leaks, malfunctions, or system irregularities and take corrective actions
  • Troubleshoot equipment and perform minor repairs to prevent breakdowns
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain turbines, pumps, compressors, and generators
  • Analyze instrument readings and maintain logs of plant operations and safety checks
  • Coordinate power generation loads and distribution to meet demand requirements
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations in energy production
