Main Duties

Water and waste treatment plant operators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate and monitor computerized control systems to regulate water treatment and wastewater processing
  • Inspect plant equipment such as pumps, valves, filters, and meters to ensure proper functioning
  • Collect and test water and wastewater samples to analyze chemical and bacterial content
  • Adjust treatment processes and chemical levels to meet regulatory standards
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial water quality and environmental regulations
  • Perform preventive maintenance and assist in repair and installation of plant equipment
  • Maintain logs, reports, and operational records for regulatory and internal audits
  • Respond to system alerts, emergencies, and public inquiries regarding water safety
  • Support implementation of advanced systems such as SCADA and automated monitoring technologies
