Main Duties

Sawmill machine operators perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Operate automated lumbermill equipment from control rooms or consoles to cut logs into rough lumber
  • Use laser scanners and computer systems to determine optimal cutting patterns for timber
  • Monitor control panels and computer displays to ensure accurate and efficient cutting operations
  • Set up and adjust sawmill machinery including circular saws, band saws, and planers
  • Replace and maintain saw blades and cutting tools using precision equipment
  • Inspect lumber products to ensure they meet required dimensions and quality standards
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting to minimize machine downtime
  • Maintain production records and report any defects or irregularities
