Main Duties

Lumber graders and other wood processing inspectors and graders perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Inspect lumber and wood products for defects such as knots, cracks, splits, and rot
  • Sort and grade wood products according to established industry standards and specifications
  • Measure wood dimensions using calipers, gauges, and other precision tools
  • Verify that products meet thickness, width, length, and quality requirements
  • Use moisture meters and other testing equipment to ensure proper drying and treatment
  • Mark graded wood products with stamps or identification codes
  • Prepare inspection reports and communicate quality issues to supervisors
  • Monitor production processes and ensure compliance with quality control procedures
  • Operate and calibrate automated grading systems using scanners, X-ray, and 3D imaging technologies
