Note: These amounts are in addition to the first year’s tuition and transportation costs for the applicant and any accompanying family members.
Why the change matters
– IRCC updates proof-of-funds annually using 75% of Statistics Canada’s Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) for each family size.
– Since July 2026, officer instructions require visa officers to verify the source of funds in all study-permit cases, increasing documentary scrutiny.
How family size and costs are calculated
– Family size includes the applicant plus any family members who will accompany them to Canada.
– Transportation costs must cover the applicant and any accompanying family members.
– For tuition, IRCC expects proof that the first year’s enrollment costs are payable; for programs longer than one year, applicants must explain how they will fund subsequent years.
Acceptable proof — three main categories
1) Fees already paid
– Official receipts for tuition and housing already paid to the school (additional proof of living/travel funds is still required).
2) Funds currently available
– Student/education loan documents; Canadian bank account in the student’s name (if funds transferred to Canada); GIC confirmations; bank statements for the last six months; pension or rental income documents.
3) Expected or promised support
– Scholarship letters or government-funded program documentation; recent pay stubs; a signed support letter from the sponsor stating relationship, occupation, number of dependants (if any), and the exact amount of support, backed by the sponsor’s ID and evidence of their finances or business registration.
Other important points
– Applicants may face additional documentary requirements depending on their visa office and country of residence. Check local visa office instructions.
– Applicants from countries with foreign exchange controls must show they can legally export the required funds.
– Applications received before Sept 1, 2026 will be assessed under the previous amounts in effect on the file receipt date.
Quebec — separate process and amounts
Students planning to study in Quebec must first obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (QAC) and meet Quebec’s financial thresholds (figures last updated Jan 1, 2026). These amounts do not include tuition or travel:
– 1 (principal applicant): $24,617
– 2 family members: $34,814
– 3 family members: $42,638
– 4 family members: $49,234
– 5 family members: $55,045
– 6 family members: $60,299
– Each additional family member: add $5,254
Practical steps for applicants
– Review visa office instructions for your country.
– Gather six months of bank statements, loan approval letters, GIC confirmations, scholarship letters, pay stubs, and any documents showing the source of funds (sale of assets, employment income, etc.).
– If using a sponsor, obtain a detailed support letter plus the sponsor’s ID and financial evidence.
– If your program is longer than one year, prepare a funding plan for the remaining years.
– If ready to apply before Sept 1, 2026, consider submitting earlier to be assessed under the prior thresholds — but do not sacrifice completeness or accuracy.
