Post Graduate Work Permit
If you’re an international student in Canada, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most important pathways to gain Canadian work experience after finishing your studies. A PGWP is typically an open work permit, meaning you can work for almost any employer in Canada (subject to standard conditions). GTR Immigration helps students plan the “Study → PGWP → PR” route correctly—from program selection to PGWP filing—so you reduce refusal risk and maximize PR opportunities.
What is PGWP in Canada?
The PGWP is a work permit issued to eligible graduates from PGWP-eligible Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs).
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Benefits
It lets you gain Canadian work experience that may support future PR pathways (e.g., Express Entry / PNPs—depending on your profile).
PGWP Eligibility Requirements
You may be eligible if you meet all of the following:
Program Completion
You completed a program at a PGWP-eligible DLI.
Program Location
Your program was at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Québec credentials).
Program Delivery
You maintained full-time student status during each academic session (you may be part-time in your final semester).
Program Completion Timing
You apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation you completed your program (like final transcript/letter).
Important: Language test requirement (new rule)
If you apply on or after November 1, 2024, you must include proof of English/French language ability, with limited exceptions (e.g., PGWP-eligible flight school graduates).
Important: Field of study requirement (for some programs)
IRCC updated the PGWP eligible fields of study list and tied it to labour-market priorities. Students who applied for a study permit before June 25, 2025 may be “grandfathered” based on the list at the time they applied (even if later removed).
Note
GTR Immigration Tip: Before you choose a program, confirm (1) DLI eligibility, (2) PGWP eligibility, (3) field-of-study rules (if applicable)—this is one of the most common planning mistakes.
PGWP Duration (How Long You Can Get)
PGWP length depends mainly on your program length:
8 months to under 2 years: PGWP may be valid up to the same length as your program.
2 years or more: PGWP may be valid up to 3 years.
Multiple programs: In many cases, you may be able to combine eligible programs to qualify for a longer PGWP (rules and timing matter).
Refusal Reasons
Common PGWP Refusal Reasons
Application Timing
Applying after the 180-day deadline
Financial Stability
Studying at a non-PGWP-eligible school/program

Missing language test results (for applicable applicants)
Spousal Factors
Confusion about field-of-study eligibility (where applicable)
